Hello?!? Girls Like Comics Too!

Reading has always been an integral part of our family time as it is with most families. As the girls grow older, finding the proper bridge between picture books and what they call "boring, pictureless novels" is logically the comic book.

​

Walking into a comic store with my girls, I have found, is quite an uneven experience. The world of comics is decidedly geared toward boys. Trying to find quality comic books for young girls is not an easy task. There is Wonder Woman of course and the Archie comics never seem to go away but there had to be more options out there. So I did some further research.

​

Thanks to the internet and other like-minded dads in the same dilemma, I set out to uncover an unknown world for my girls to enjoy.

​

To narrow things down I decided on some required content criteria:

  • Strong female characters

  • Not too superhero-y (Sorry Wonder Woman, not yet)

  • Not directly associated with other products like Barbie or Disney-like tie-ins

 

I was pleasantly surprised with what I found! First up -

As a kid, waking up to watch Saturday morning cartoons with my mom was an event and my Ontario hometown still had two operational drive-in theaters. I miss those days. Now, in my forties, I am raising two daughters with whom I can relive those times and babble-on about it for your amusement.
